Abstract

600,010. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd (International Standard Electric Corporation). June 27, 1944, No. 12185. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (c)] A gas discharge tube which tests for the presence of a particular condition is made to take account of the continuance of the condition by causing it to test repeatedly under the control of an interrupter. In an identification system, the 20-line group containing a calling line is first identified by a multi-wiper finder F, and an appropriate final selector then hunts over the level allotted to that group to identify the individual line. The test wires of each 20-line group are commoned and connected over transformers T1 to the contacts of the finder F, each wiper of which is connected over a transformer T2 to the control electrode of a cold-cathode tube L. When a calling line has been extended by first and second line finders LF1, LF2, an alternating potential is placed on the test wire from a source Q and the finder F is started by relay Ar. In due course the marking potential stepped up by transformers T1, T2 fires the tube L which is biassed from a potentiometer Pt and relay Tr energizes in the main discharge path and disconnects relay R1, which was connected up by Ar. Relay R2 energizes over the left-hand wiper provided no other finder F is standing in the same position and brings about the operation of slow-release relay Sr1 which closes a marking or indicating circuit X and a periodically interrupted circuit for relay Vr. Each time relay Vr operates it extinguishes the main gap of the tube L which therefore tests again. If the marking potential is absent, the continued operation of R1 brings about the release of Sr1. To guard against operation by spurious impulses, it may be arranged that no indication is given until the tube L has responded a second time. Specification 597,688 is referred to.
