Abstract
599,794. Polarizing sheets. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. April 14, 1944, No. 6917. Convention date, May 7, 1943. [Class 97 (i)] In a process of manufacturing light polarizing material from a molecularly oriented sheet comprising a linear polyvinyl oxy-compound of the kind described in Specification 549,698, the sheet is stained with an iodine solution and a portion of the staining solution then removed. As shown, the molecularly oriented sheet 10 is passed from a supply roll 12 through a tank 15 containing a relatively strong iodine staining solution 16, then through a bank 18 containing water to remove a portion of the staining solution. The sheet may then be dried in air or in an oven at 60‹ C. Superior results are stated to be produced if, before staining, the sheet is baked at 145‹ C. for ten to fifteen minutes.
