Abstract
599,620. Lathes. PORTERFIELD, W., MARSON, L. J., and MAIN ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Feb. 26, 1945, No. 4730.. [Class 83 (iii)] An automatic lathe or screw machine comprises a headstock bracket and rotatable work-carrying spindle disposed at one end of the bracket, a pair of parallel rods projecting from the bracket in cantilever fashion parallel to the spindle, tool carrying means movable on the rods and a cam-shaft parallel to and mounted below the rods, the outer ends of the latter and of the camshaft being braced by a detachable yoke. The work spindle 11, Fig. 1, is carried by the arms 7, 8 of the headstock bracket 1 and rods 44 project therefrom adapted to carry an adjustable saddle 50. The latter is clamped in position prior to a working operation and a tool 51 carried in a slidable holder 52 is moved towards the work by a lever 54 operated by a cam drum 55. The latter is carried by a camshaft 32 which extends from the headstock framework and is braced to the tubular supporting rods 44 by a removable yoke member 45. Lever tool-rests 42, 43, Fig. 2, are provided for cutting-off and form tools respectively, these are rockably supported by the tubular members 44 and operated against a return spring 49 by cams 46 and 47 carried on the cam-shaft 32. This shaft is driven through worm gearing and a belt 37 from the main spindle 11. The hollow work spindle is provided with colletoperating means driven from the cam-shaft. The saddle 50 may support an automatically indexible tool-head advanced by cam means. Specification 599,664 is referred to.
