Abstract

599,286. Furnaces. FOSTER WHEELER, Ltd., and HOPEWELL, G. H. Sept. 14, 1945 No. 23758. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Groups II and XXX] Coal is fed on to a travelling grate through two or more inlets which are spaced apart along the length of the grate in such manner that the coal is distributed along the grate, the large particles being deposited furthest from the ashdumping end of the grate, the points of deposition becoming progressively nearer to the ashdumping end as the coal decreases in particle size. As shown, the coal which has been progressively screened to obtain four particle sizes (see Groups II and XXX), is supplied according to the sizes, to hoppers 13, 14, 15, 16. The large particles in the hopper 13 are deposited directly on to the travelling grate and the smallest particles are transferred from the hopper 16 to the grate by a reciprocating pusher and an air or gas stream from the chamber 18 which directs them to the correct position on the grate. The intermediate sizes are supplied from the hoppers 14, 15 and are projected laterally into the furnace by known sprinkler apparatus. In a modification, the intermediate hoppers 14, 15 are omitted. The large particles are deposited, as before, on the grate remote from the ash dumping end above which is arranged a hopper feed apparatus which is supplied with coal of intermediate and smallest particle sizes. The coal is projected longitudinally of, and above, the conveyer by known sprinkler apparatus, but downwardly directed jets of air or combustion products force the finer particles down on to the grate near to the ash-pit.
