Abstract

599,189. Regulating air compressors. PESCO PRODUCTS CO. Dec. 24,1943, No. 21642. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1942. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A control device 16 for vacuum systems, especially those used to operate aircraft instruments comprises a valve 44 which is normally closed to cut off the system from a source of outside pressure and pressure responsive means such as the diaphragm 54 subject to a second source of pressure, such as aircraft cabin pressure, for unseating the valve, and admitting outside pressure to the system. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device 16 comprises a cylindrical housing 30 with a connection 22 to a vacuum pump 20, a second connection 18 to a vacuum-operated instrument within the air. craft cabin 12, a third connection 28 to atmosphere through a filter 26 and a fourth connection 24 to the pressure in the cabin 12. The base of the housing 30 is closed by a base 34 having an integral spindle guide 38. The guide 38 has a bearing bush 42 and is provided with a vent hole 41. The valve disc 44 is normally forced to its seating 68 by a spring 70. The valve has an integral spindle 39 clamped at its upper end to a diaphragm 54 of rubberised fabric or neoprene clamped at its periphery to the housing 30 by a cover 35. Ports 50 in a spider 60 place the diaphragm in communioation with the atmospheric connection 28. In operation, the valve 44 remains seated until the vacuum in the system exceeds a predetermined amount when it opens to restore the vacuum to normal. As the aircraft ascends, the atmospheric pressure decreases whilst the pressure in the cabin is maintained by a supercharger so that the pressure on the diaphragm opens the valve 44 and relieves the load on the pump 20. At high altitudes, say 40,000 ft., with the valve 44 fully open and the pump 20 completely unloaded, the vacuum created in the system may exceed the predetermined amount and adversely affect the instrument. To prevent this, a second valve may be inserted in the connection 18 to admit some of the pressure from the cabin when the vacuum exceeds the predetermined amount.
