Abstract

598,360. Indicating vibrations. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Jan. 10, 1945, No. 887. Convention date, Jan. 10, 1944. [Class 40 (iv)] A vibration detector comprises a support 12 which may be mounted on the member whose vibration is to be detected and which carries a magnetostrictive element 16 under initial tension or compression and forming part of a magnetic circuit linked with a coil 19 which is connected to a current measuring or indicating instrument. Part of the magnetic circuit, which may be the element 16, may be a permanent magnet. In a modification, the element may be put under adjustable compression or tension by operating a screwed rod in the mounting and thus the sensitivity of the instrument may be varied. The output of the instrument may pass through an amplifier to an oscillograph to give a visual indication of the vibrations. The apparatus may be used as a detonation detector for use with internal-combustion engines and in this case a detector may be screwed on each cylinder. A selector switch connects one or more of the detectors to the indicator. A further switch driven by the engine may be provided to connect any detector to the indicator at some particular point only in the engine cycle, for example only during the combustion stroke of the particular cylinder.
