[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] Scraping ; tools.-In a machine for removing burrs from metal articles such as the burrs 16, Fig. 7, which are formed when a strip 10 is slotted transversely in the manufacture of hinge parts, the strip is moved along a workholder past a scraping-cutter and an abrasive member which act in succession on the side A of the strip, and then past another abrasive member which acts on the curved surface B. The work-holder comprises a lower support 20, Figs. 1 and 5, and side guides 22 and the strip is pushed through the machine by hand tools engaging the slots in the work. The cutter 24, Fig. 3, is mounted on an adjustable carrier 34 and the work is pressed against it by a plunger 40 acted upon by a spring 48 and capable of being retracted by a handle 50 to allow introduction of the work. After passing the cutter, the upper surface of the work is acted upon by an abrasive block 26 carried by a holder 52 pivoted at 54 on a lever 52<1> pivoted at 58 to a bracket 56 carried by a support 60. Vertical slots on the support enable it to be adjustably clamped to pillars 62, 64 on the machine frame, and a compression spring located between the lever 52<1> and the holder 52 presses the block resiliently against the work: The compression of the spring is adjusted by a screw 74 in a stirrup 70 attached to the lever which presses against the top surface of the lever. The holder 52 and lever may be urged downwardly by gravity or by a compression spring 78, Fig. 1, pressing against the top of the lever and adjusted by a screw and nut 82 in a stirrup 76 attached to the support 60. The side A of the work which has been scraped by the cutter 24 is next engaged by an abrasive block 28 against which it is pressed by a vertically adjustable plate 90. The block 28 is carried by a housing 102, Figs. 1 and 5, on a plate 104 pivoted at 110 to a cranked lever 108. Screws 114 on plate 104 adjust the block about pivot 110 to align it with the work. The lever 108 is pivoted at 117 to a plate 116 carried by a transverse support 120 and is urged towards the work by an adjustable compression spring 122. The support 120 is transversely adjustable by a rod 136 in a horizontal fixed stirrup 134 and the stirrup is pivoted at 146 to a slide 144 vertically adjustable by a screw 156 and clamped by a screw 150, the pivot 146 allowing the support 120 to be swung away from the work. Removing cuttings.-An air jet may be directed by a pipe 160, Fig. 5, against the work adjacent to the cutter 24 to clear away cuttings.
