Abstract

Textile materials are laundered by treating them with an acid positively-charged emulsion of a substantially water-insoluble saponifiable substance so that the substance is deposited upon the textile materials, and subsequently saponifying the emulsified substance on the materials. The materials may be rinsed with water after treatment with the acid emulsion and before saponification in order to remove, as soluble salts, the insoluble calcium soaps present in the textiles. The substantivity of the dispersed saponifiable material may be increased by adding aluminium salts. The emulsion may be directly applied as an acid emulsion, or an alkaline or neutral emulsion may be applied and converted to an acid emulsion in contact with the materials. Suitable emulsions are prepared from (1) arachis fatty acids, tallow fatty acids, casein and formic acid; (2) olein, casein and formic acid; (3) mixed fatty acids and skin glue followed by addition of aluminium triformate and formic acid; (4) mixed fatty acids, casein, borax and sodium pentachlorphenate followed by addition of aluminium triformate and formic acid. In examples (5) and (6), cotton and woollen goods are treated firstly with the acid emulsion, followed by washing and saponifying with soda ash. In example (7), grey cotton cloth is run in open width or rope form through the emulsion of example (3), and after piling down if desired, the cloth is mangled and treated in the keir with a solution of caustic soda under pressure. In example (8), jute fabric is deoiled on the jig using the alkaline emulsion of example (3), which after 2 or 3 ends is acidified by adding the mixture of aluminium triformate and formic acid, followed by washing and saponification with sodium metasilicate. Specifications 333,177, [Class 15 (ii)], 380,052, 380,065, 380,076, [all in Group III], 394,816 and 421,519, [Group III], are referred to.
