Abstract

An extrusion die or spinneret is made entirely of, or has a surface consisting of, or a surface coated with, a tetrafluoroethylene polymer, the said surface being that contacted by the material to be extruded or spun, and the said <PICT:0597006/IV/1> <PICT:0597006/IV/2> surface being the external surface for delivering the extruded or spun material. Fig. 1 shows attached to a conventional extrusion apparatus 1 a die 4 in which certain surfaces are coated by the tetrafluoroethylene polymer 5. The chamber 6 can be used for a heating liquid, but can in fact be used for a cooling liquid, since the plastic 3 being extruded can be set and hardened without difficulty within the die. In a case such as is shown in this diagram, the die is most conveniently coated by being dipped in the molten tetrafluoroethylene polymer. Fig. 4 shows a spinneret 16 made entirely from a solid block of the polymer machined to fit the delivery end 10 of a conventional spinning apparatus. The spinneret alternatively may be made of metal with a coating on the delivery side: this coating will stop effectively the accumulation of extrusion plastic on the external surface and eliminate the frequent interruptions due to this cause encountered in melt-spinning. Alternatively, a thin film of polymerized tetrafluoroethylene can be given to the spinneret by rubbing it with a piece of the polymer. Copolymers, for example, those obtained by polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene with small amounts of other unsaturated compounds such as ethylene, may be used for the construction of the die. The material to be extruded may be polyethylene, nylon (melt-spinning) cellulose acetate (dry-spinning) or viscose (wet-spinning). The polymerized tetrafluoroethylene may be modified by addition of fillers such as carbon, silica, fluorspar, mica, fuller's earth, glass, asbestos, metal flakes, &c. Resistance heating wires may be embedded in it if required. It may be a comparatively low molecular weight, hard, waxy, high-melting material up to a high molecular weight film-forming polymer. In an example, polyethylene is extruded through a die lined with tetrafluroethylene polymer. No adhesion of the polyethylene to the die is noticed and the extruded material is characterised by an exceptionally smooth surface.
