Abstract
596,914. Turning. KENDALL, F. W. Dec. 7, 1944, No. 24478. [Class 83 (iii)] Rotating and locking mechanism for a lathe or like turret of the type comprising an operating member, moving axially in the direction of the turret axis, engaging a cam groove, has the latter arranged longitudinally in the member to be rotation and merging at each end into a straight portion so that the operating member accelerates the member to be rotated and then decelerates it, finally, during the last part of its movement, holding the rotatable member stationary. A two-station horizontal turret adapted to be oscillated between the stations has a cam-sleeve 1 secured to the turret witH a peripheral slot 2a, 2b, shown in developed view in Fig. 3. A roller 5 carried by a pin on a vertical rack 3 engages the cam groove and reciprocation of the rack in the housing 4, in conjunction with the shaped cam-groove, gives oscillating or indexing movements to the turret. The straight portions of the cam-groove give sufficient dwell for the actuation of a spring-pressed locking plunger 19 which is raised to free the turret by a cam 16 and lever 17, the former carried by a shaft 7 which through a pinion 6 gives the reciprocating movement to the rack. The shaft 7 is moved by a rack on the end of a lever oscillated by cams on the main camshaft. Two rack-bars operating in conjunction with two cam-grooves on the sleeve 1 may be used to index a turret through ninety-degree steps in the same direction. The rack bars and locking plunger may be operated hydraulically.
