Abstract

<PICT:0596525/III/1> <PICT:0596525/III/2> <PICT:0596525/III/3> <PICT:0596525/III/4> Gum or a similar substance is removed from or applied to a flat horizontal surface such as the top of a table for screen printing by means of an apparatus which comprises a plurality of independently mounted and self-levelling blades resting on the surface and pressed resiliently thereon, and carried on bars extending across the surface and mounted on a carriage also carrying a gum container, the carriage being mounted on rails on the table or other surface so that it can traverse the table from end to end. Referring to the Figure, a table 8 has rails 9 at both sides, on which wheels 10, mounted on carriage 11, run. Mounted on carriage 11 are cross members 12 in front of which are parallel flat cross members 13 each having a handle 14 at each end so that members 13 may be turned parallel or at right angles to the table. Arms 15 are slidably fixed in sockets 16 turnable on members 12. At the end of arm 15 are a pair of cylinders 17 on short arm 15a, Fig. 4 and 6, having springs 18 surrounding rods 19 and pressing on shoulders thereof nuts 20 regulating this pressure, while at the foot of rods 19 are blades 19a. The adjustment of nuts 20 allows the blade edge to be set at the efficient working angle. Arms 15 rest on members 13 so that by turning handle 14 the arms can be tilted off table 8 or can be brought to rest thereon under their own weight. At the front of carriage 8 is mounted tank 21 having wheels 22 running on rails 23 and having a delivery opening 24 controlled by valve 25 to run liquid on to the table. At the other end of the machine are pivoted arms 26 with slots 27 and rachets 28 with which pawls 29 cooperate to hold down on the table a roller 30 on which is wound a length of cloth. Gum is removed from the table by moving the apparatus along the table with the front and back blades down (by lowering cross members 13) and supplying water to this table when the blades scrape off the old gum. The carriage is then returned to the starting end, the roll of cloth mounted in slots 27 of arms 26, which are pulled down to press cloth on table, handle 25 turned to allow gum to flow on to the table, and the carriage moved along the table. As the gum flows on to the table front blades 19a push it in front of them leaving a gum coating which is smoothed off and spread thinly by the rear set of blades so that the cloth from roller 30 coming along behind is gummed evenly and smoothly to the table.
