Abstract

A machine for producing memorandum and like pads wherein the paper sheets are fed singly and superposed on a table, each sheet having a strip of gum applied thereto by a gumming blade and, when the pad is complete, the table is moved to feed the pad to perforating rollers, the gumming blade 7, Fig. 5, is carried by trunnions rotatable in a pair of arms 45 on a shaft 46 oscillated by a pinion 47 which is driven by a sector gear oscillated by a crank lever (see Group XV). One trunnion has fixed thereto a gear 62 engaging an idler gear 61 on the corresponding arm 45, the gear 61 meshing with a gear 59 fixed to the frame of the machine so that, as the arms 45 are rocked, the blade remains vertical as it moves to and from a gum-supply roller and the sheets. In certain kinds of pads the top sheet is narrower than the others and therefore the top sheet but one is gummed over part of its width only. To <PICT:0596414/III/1> <PICT:0596414/III/2> effect this, the blade 7 may be secured to a shaft 69, Fig. 6, to which a shorter gumming blade 70 is secured and the gear 59, instead of being fixed to the frame, is carried by a lever 72 connected to and moved by a pedal, depression of which rotates the shaft 69 and carries the blade 70 into the vertical position. In a modification wherein a wider blade is used, a lever similar to the lever 72 is spring-urged into contact with a cam which is so shaped that when the gumming blade is in contact with the gumming roller, the lever and thereby the gumming blade are oscillated so that the whole area of the blade contacts the gumming roller.
