Abstract
In the manufacture of flexible films or foils by casting a solution of a polyvinyl resin in a volatile solvent with, if desired, the addition of plasticisers, on to a moving support, the film so formed after the solvent has been evaporated is readily stripped from the support without deformation by applying to the support before the polyvinyl resin film is cast thereon, a film of cellulose triacetate having a thickness not greater than 1/100 mm. The combined polyvinyl resin film and cellulose triacetate film are stripped together from the support. The cellulose triacetate in solution in a volatile solvent or solvent mixture which preferably is of the same nature as that employed for dissolving the polyvinyl resin, may be applied to the support by spreading with a cotton wad or by an atomiser. Specified polyvinyl resins are polyvinyl formaldehyde acetal and polyvinyl butyraldehyde acetal. In an example, a dilute solution of cellulose triacetate in methylene chloride-alcohol is spread on to an endless metallic casting band and the solvent evaporated to leave a cellulose acetate veil of less than 0.01 mm. thickness. A solution of polyvinyl formaldehyde acetal in methylene chloride-alcohol containing ethylparatoluene sulphonamide is then poured on to the coated band, the solvent evaporated and the film so formed is stripped without difficulty. The films may be employed in the manufacture of safety glass and for other purposes.
