Abstract
<PICT:0595142/III/1> Glyceride oils are bodied by subjecting the oil for 2 to 12 hours to high vacuum unobstructed path distillation at a temperature within the range 270 DEG to 375 DEG C. and under a pressure from 1m to 1mm. During this treatment the non-polymerizable glycerides present in the oil distil slowly and are condensed and withdrawn from the still, whilst the polymerizable glycerides are simultaneously polymerized and remain as a residue. The vapours evolved may be fractionated. Oils which may be treated are linseed, soybean, oiticica, sardine, and menhadin oils. The oil is introduced through conduit 21 into a vessel 2. The pumps connected to conduit 8 are put into operation, agitator 18 is set rotating, and heating fluid is introduced into heating coil 10. The vapours generated from liquid 22 are condensed on the walls of cover 6 which is cooled by cooling fluid circulating through conduit 28. The condensate flows into gutter 24 and is withdrawn through conduit 26. The treatment is continued until the oil 22 has the desired characteristics. In an example, soybean oil that had been stripped of vitamins and sterols by molecular distillation was treated at 280 DEG -300 DEG C. for 10 hours at a pressure of 9m . During this period 55 per cent. was removed as distillate. The residual oil had a viscosity of 6 poises absolute at 25 DEG C., was clear, light yellow in colour, and had unique drying properties. Specifications 452,653, 477,955 and 548,257 are referred to.
