Abstract
594,887. Radio navigation. MAR CONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Sept. 26, 1944, No. 18417.Convention date, Nov. 2, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] For determining the position of a mobile station by measuring the distances from each of a plurality of fixed stations 6, 106, the mobile station transmits to each of the fixed stations a frequency-modulated signal (of mean frequency f) which is transmitted back from the fixed stations with a frequency change F<1> different for each station. The mobile station also transmits directly to its receivers 17, 1017 the frequencies F+f and F<1>+f similarly frequency-modulated so that heat-frequency detectors 19, 1019 produce direct voltages proportional to the distances. In the system shown, the map position of the mobile station is shown on the screen of a two-gun cathode-ray tube 31. Alternating current from a source 45 is fed in quadrature to the pairs of deflecting plates of both guns producing circular traces the centres of Which are adjusted by control circuits 43, 37 to the map positions 59, 61 of the fixed stations. The radii of the circular traces are made proportional to the distances by modulating the outputs of source 45 with the voltages from circuits 19, 1019 so that one of the intersections (i3 of the traces will give the map position of the mobile stationTo resolve the ambiguity, if necessary, a third trace corresponding to a third fixed station may be added.
