Abstract

Catalysts used for the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde contain phosphorus, molybdenum as a promoter and one of the metals manganese, magnesium, cadmium and the alkaline earth metals, the atomic ratio of phosphorus to molybdenum being at least 2 : 1. They may be further promoted by the addition of alkali metal phosphates and carbonates and are prepared as follows: (1) manganese-phosphate is precipitated by adding ammonium hydroxide to a solution of manganese nitrate and phosphoric acid, and after washing and drying is kneaded with ammonium molybdate and dried; (2) hydrated manganese acetate is kneaded with orthophosphoric acid and ammonium molybdate and ignited; (3) manganese phosphate is kneaded with ammonium molybdate and sodium hydrogen phosphate; (4) calcium phosphate is p precipitated by means of ammonia from a solution of calcium nitrate and phosphoric acid. After washing, the calcium phosphate is kneaded with ammonium molybdate and water and ignited; (5) calcium phosphate-molybdate catalyst prepared as in (4) is further promoted by adding sodium hydrogen phosphate and igniting.ALSO:Formaldehyde is prepared by oxidizing methanol in the vapour phase with an oxygen containing gas in the presence of an oxidation catalyst containing (1) phosphorus, (2) molybdenum, as a promoter, and (3) one of the metals manganese, magnesium, cadmium and the alkaline earth metals, the atomic ratio of phosphorus to molybdenum being at least 2 : 1. The catalyst may also be further promoted by the addition of alkali metal phosphates or carbonates and may be supported on a carrier such as pumice, silica gel or infusorial earth. Catalysts may be prepared as follows: (1) manganese phosphate is precipitated by adding ammonium hydroxide to a solution of manganese nitrate and phosphoric acid and after washing and drying is kneaded with ammonium molybdate and dried; (2) hydrated manganese acetate is kneaded with orthophosphoric acid and ammonium molybdate and ignited; (3) manganese phosphate is kneaded with ammonium molybdate and sodium hydrogen phosphate; (4) calcium phosphate is precipitated by means of ammonia from a solution of calcium nitrate containing also phosphoric acid. After washing and igniting, the calcium phosphate is kneaded with ammonium molybdate and water and again ignited; (5) calcium phosphate-molybdate catalyst prepared as in (4) is further promoted by adding sodium hydrogen phosphate and igniting. Specifications 280,712, 286,212, 296,071, 298,142, [all in Class 2 (iii)], and 547,743 are referred to.
