The outer end 56 of the hammer device 38 forms the beater surface and is preferably slightly curved : an adjacent portion 58 is hollowed out to avoid contact with the slipper during the operation of the machine. The slipper is supported on a ciirved horn 46, having a button 48 at its upper end and the horn is vertically adjustable and can also pivot freely about a vertical axis with the button centre in line with the axis of the bracket 44, in which the horn is supported, and also with the plunger 22. The axis' about which the horn 46 and hammer device. 38 pivot are at right angles, to one another and offset so that the hammer device 38 has a component of movement across the shoe-engaging surface of the horn.
