Abstract

Heavy hydrocarbon oil containing unvaporisable material, such as inorganic salts, is separated into gas oil and a residual fraction and the two fractions are submitted to catalytic cracking in separate zones, the cracking temperature for the residual fraction being higher than that for gas oil whereby the former is completely converted to vapours and coke; the spent catalyst from the gas oil cracking is regenerated and at least some of this regenerated catalyst is then used for cracking the residual fraction. Crude oil, introduced to still 12 through line 10, is separated into gasoline, heavy naphtha, <PICT:0592494/III/1> gas oil and bottoms. Liquid gas oil (boiling range between 450 DEG and 850 DEG F.), withdrawn through line 18, is mixed with hot regenerated catalyst from standpipe 28 and sent via line 34 to reaction zone 38 in which a temperature of 875 DEG to 900 DEG F. is maintained. The catalyst, separated from reaction products in cyclone 48, passes through standpipes 54, 62 into regenerator 72, is separated from regeneration gases in cyclone 82 and then passes to standpipe 28. The bottoms from still 12 are introduced into fractionating tower 98 where they are heated directly by the reaction product vapours from cyclone 48. The residual fraction withdrawn from the base of the column 98 through line 114, is mixed with regenerated catalyst from both standpipes 28 and 116, partly vaporized and coked in coil 122 and then introduced into reaction zone 128 where a temperature of 950 DEG to 1050 DEG F. is maintained and the residual oil is completely converted into gasoline, gas oil and coke. The catalyst is separated from the gaseous products in cyclone 135 and the products are passed to tower 98 via lines 142, 144 and 50. The separated catalyst passes through standpipe 148 and a portion is removed from the system through line 158, fresh make-up catalyst being introduced into the system through line 174 connected to regenerator 72. The portion of the spent catalyst not withdrawn through line 158 is regenerated in zone 178, separated from regeneration gases in cyclone 186, and introduced into standpipe 116. Dense phase operation may be applied in the reaction zones and regenerators.
