Abstract
A composite heat and electricity insulating-material comprises a number of layers of inorganic insulating-material, one at least of which comprises mica plates bonded together at a temperature of 175-325 DEG F. and at a pressure of 50-500 lbs. per square inch with the reaction product of ethyl silicate and a polyvinyl acetate, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylic, or polystyrene resin, the ethyl silicate being present in an amount equal to 3.17-158.7 per cent, and preferably 3.17-31.75 per cent, of the resinous material. The ethyl silicate used is preferably one consisting predominantly of tetraethyl orthosilicate containing small amounts of polysilicates, and contains 31.5 per cent of combined silica. The silicate is first partially hydrolysed by mixing with water and alcohol or water, acetone, and a small amount of hydrochloric or other inorganic acid. The resinous material is dissolved in alcohol, and the two solutions are mixed in the proportions of 2.54-127 parts by weight of silicate to 80 parts of resinous material. The mica plates are layered on screens and the binder in liquid form is applied between successive layers, and the material is then consolidated.ALSO:A composite heat and electricity insulating material comprises a number of layers of inorganic insulating material one at least of which comprises mica flakes bonded together at a temperature of 175-325 DEG F. and at a pressure of 50-500 lbs. per square inch with the reaction product of ethyl silicate and a polyvinyl acetate, partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate, polyacylic, or polystyrene resin, the ethyl silicate being present in an amount equal to 3.17-158.7 per cent., and preferably 3.17-31.75 per cent., of the resinous material.
