Abstract
591,865. Electric pick-ups. BURGESS, A. F. (Zenith Radio Corporation). Sept. 11, 1944, No. 17310. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a gramophone pickup in which the movement of the stylus varies an inductance associated with the tuned circuit of a high-frequency oscillator, thereby varying the frequency of the oscillations generated, one part of the inductance is carried by the stylus intermediate its point of support in the pick-up and its record-engaging point. As shown, the stylus 13 carries a disc 20 mounted adjacent to a coil 21 fixed to the body of the pick-up. The disc may be magnetic or of a conducting metal or alloy, e.g. copper, nickel, or silver or an aluminium alloy, and may be separate from or integral with the stylus 13. In an alternative construction, Fig. 6 (not shown), the positions of the disc 20 and coil 21 are interchanged. The stylus 13 is held by means of a cross-head 15 between resilient blocks 16 clamped by a screw 19 engaging a bearing plate 18. The pick-up is mounted by a blade-spring 8 on the end of the arm 1, the spring being of sufficient strength to enable the stylus to support the pick-up, and the pick-up casing is provided with a portion 29 which lies adjacent to the surface of the record and engages the record in the case of sudden shocks to relieve pressure on the stylus point. The pick-up frame members 9, 10 are preferably of low-loss insulating material such as polystyrene.
