591,223. Ticket -,issuing machines. UNION TOTALISATOR CO., Ltd., and HANDLEY, J. Nov. 5, 1944, No. 8589. [Class 106 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A ticket printing and issuing machine for totalisators incorporates printing, issuing and guillotining mechanisms, a solenoid, a switch controlling the solenoid, a plunger influenced by the solenoid, a rotor adapted on rotation to free the switch, a shaft connected to the plunger, means operatively connected to said shaft for bringing about operation of said mechanisms, and means operative on rotation of said rotor to control the sending of a bet. The machine is part of the totalisator system described in Specification 572,103, [Group XXXVIII], and operates as follows. Thumb-wheel 156, Fig. 4, is set for the correct race number and by means of gearing positions the race number type-wheel 161<1> and also sends a signal to the control apparatus by means of rotary switch 155. The wheel 144 is then set for the number of competitors taking part in the race and another signal is sent to the control apparatus from rotary switch 154. A stake key in row 70, Figs. 3 and 4, a first selection key, row 71, and a second selection key, row 72, are then depressed to place a bet, each depressed key completing a circuit to the control apparatus by means of contacts 102, 103 and 104, Fig. 3. Depression of a stake key, row 70, causes a bar 59 to move either to left or right as viewed in Fig. 4, so rotating and positioning the typewheel 48 by means of toothed sector 51. Similarly, depression of a first selection key and a second selection key position type-wheels 49 and 50, Fig. 3. The movement of bar 59 also positions, by means of cam plate 142, a shroud 113 around a ratchet-wheel 114 to predetermine the amount that a pawl 112 will rotate this wheel when actuated as described later. When a stake key, a first selection key and a second selection key are fully depressed they are locked by means of locking bars and a shaft 90, Fig. 6, is rocked so that a spindle 4 is freed to rotate, under the action of a roller 91 bearing on a cam 92 mounted on the spindle, until checked by a tooth 93 and co-operating with a relay 94, Fig. 5. A cam 95 on the spindle or rotor 4 closes the contacts 97 to signal the control apparatus to send the bet, whereupon the bet is registered in the control apparatus and a relay 100 is energized to release the relay 94 allowing the rotor 4 to rotate until it is held again on a tooth 99. On rotation of the rotor 4, a pawl 3 is tripped allowing contacts 2 to close,'so energizing the solenoid 1, not shown. The solenoid 1 rotates the shaft 6 by a link and the cam 6<1>, Fig. 3, on the shaft forces a platen 8 down on to a paper strip 9, an inking ribbon 10, a type plate 11 and the type-wheels 48, 49. 50 and 161<1> to print a ticket. The rotation of the shaft 6 is transmitted to the shaft 14, Fig. 3, by a link 13, not shown, and a pair of arms, one of which, 15, is shown swung in a counter-clockwise direction moving a knurled roller 16 and a smooth roller 17 over the paper strip along the arc of a curved guide 18. A knurled roller 21 biassed by the spring 20 prevents the paper from slipping back. During this movement of the arms 15 a guillotine blade 30 is retracted and held by a pawl 32. The rotation of shaft 14, is also transferred to shaft 108 which rotates a pinion 110, Fig. 5, 'the arm 111 and the pawl 112 which engages and rotates the ratchet-wheel 114 by an amount determined by the position of the shroud 113. The shaft 115 on which wheel 114 is mounted is thus rotated and the value of the ticket is registered on the total counter 116 and on the forecast counter 119 or the win or place counters 117, 118 depending on the keys depressed. The plunger of the solenoid is then returned by a spring and the contacts 2, Fig. 6, are opened, the shaft 6 is rotated backwardly allowing the platen 8 to be raised by a spring 37. The shaft 114 is then released to rotate under the action of a spring causing the arms 15 to feed the paper strip forward, pushing the printed ticket out of the machine. At the end of this swing of the arms 15, the guillotine blade 30 moves forward and cuts the ticket. The locking bars are then released from the keys which are returned by springs. Provision is made against issuing a ticket on a non-runner. Specification 591,260 also is referred to.
