Abstract

[Class 139] [Also in Group XL] A mechanism for counting the vibrations of a pendulum, balance wheel or other mechanical vibrator has a member carried by the vibrating member arranged to cause, during each vibration, light pulses of short duration to be directed to a photo-electric cell or other light-sensitive element. As shown in Fig. 1, a pendulum P carries at its bottom end a shutter d having a slit e through which a ray of light from a lamp f passes to photo-electric cell PC as the pendulum swings through its mid position. The photo-electric cell is in the circuit shown in Fig. 4 and the change in its resistance when a beam of light strikes it causes an impulse to go through said circuit to actuate relay L1, and close contact m from whence impulse is led to a clock dial, or a counter and also to means for maintaining the pendulum. Photo-electric cells PC 1 and PC 2, Fig. 1, are provided and are positioned to be illuminated if the pendulum overswings and to prevent temporarily the pendulum maintaining means from acting. Instead of a shutter the pendulum could carry a mirror which reflects a beam of light from a light source placed near the pendulum on to a photo-electric cell in the mid-position of the pendulum.
