Abstract

590,703. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., JENKINS, H. G., and SIMMS, C. H. Dec. 21, 1944, No. 25632. [Claas 39 (i)] An electric discharge lamp having the dis-' charge passage of spiral shape comprises an inner blown glass member 10 shown in Fig. 1 moulded to form a helical groove 12 with ridges 11, placed inside a second blown glass member which is sealed to the first along the ridges 11, as shown in Fig. 3, forming a helical discharge path of approximately semicircular cross-section. Tubulations 13 and 14 are sealed to the inner member at the ends of the groove, for example by the method according to Specification 534,952, [Group XXXVI], and electrodes 16 and 17 are sealed through pinches formed in their lower ends. The envelope is coated internally with luminescent powder, e.g. as described in Specifications 421,932 and 460,756 and may have gas or vapour filling. Materials mentioned are zinc beryllium silicate, magnesium tungsten, zinc silicate, calcium tungstate, or fillings, argon, neon or mercury vapour. In an alternative construction, the outer member is provided with a spiral groove, whereas the inner is plain as in Fig. 4 (not shown). Sealing may be effected by collapsing the outer component on to the ridge 11 or by local progressive melting with a small flame. The inner surface of the inner tube may be metallized with a film of high reflectivity, e.g. by chemical deposition of silver or a highly reflecting surface may be arranged in the space within the inner component. This space may be used to accommodate starting switches, radio interference suppressors &c. or an additional light source to modify the colour of the light. The lamp may have a plurality of separate helical discharge paths or the paths may be in the form of two-start spirals each being given a different filling. The minimum radius of curvature at the troughs of the grooves is given as 5 times the maximum thickness of the glass and the minimum at any point is equal to the maximum thickness of the glass. The glass members may be in the form of openended cylinders to allow cooling by convection currents.
