Abstract
590,541. Sound insulation. KING, A. J., SCOTT, R. A., MAGUIRE, C. R., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 4, 1944, No. 15624/45. Divided out of 6286/44. [Class 64 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A device for absorbing sound waves of a predetermined frequency and applied to a backing member, such as the wall of a ventilating shaft, comprises an air-tight enclosure C formed by a vibratory sheet B spaced from the wall A by spacers D and the air pressure in the enclosure is reduced to a value such that at the predetermined frequency the stiffness reactance of the enclosed air at the inner surface of the sheet B is approximately equal to the mass reactance of the sheet. The enclosure may contain a layer of porous material and the acoustic resistance of the enclosure as a whole is arranged to be of the same order of magnitude as the characteristic acoustic impedance of air or other medium to which the device is exposed. Intermediate spacers D may have apertures F to facilitate the withdrawal of air from the enclosure. Specification 590,540, [Group XXVII], is referred to.
