Abstract
590,520. Thermionic cathodes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1945, No. 2090. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1944, [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XL] An indirectly heated cathode for an electron discharge device comprises an insulating plate 28, Fig. 2, having an integral upturned ring 56 to which a metal disc 26, Fig. 3, carrying the emissive layer is secured, a heating coil 30, 32, in the form of a double spiral secured in the hollow enclosure thus formed out of contact with the metal disc 26, and two current supply leads for the coil connected one to both ends of the coil and the other to its mid-point, the cathode structure being supported by means of its lead-wires from an insulating seal at the base of the discharge device, Fig. 1 (not shown). The heater coil 30, 32 may be embedded in the insulating plate 28 and is preferably wound more closely near the periphery of the disc 28 than at the centre thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. In a modification, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown) the heating coil is supported above the surface of the insulating plate by means of a plurality of wire "pigtails." In a further modification, Fig. 4, the insulating plate 128 is provided with a plurality of radially extending ribs 158 integral therewith having arcuate notches 160 which serve to hold the heating coil 30, 32 in position. The upper surface of the insulating plate may be coated with heat reflecting material, e.g., magnesium oxide, so as to concentrate the heat on the metal disc 26.
