Abstract

590,139. Stuffing -box substitutes. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and HAWTHORNE, W. R. April 13, 1945, No. 9324. [Class 122 (v)] In a pressure gland, a partition member 4 mounted on the one element 2 and having a running edge clearance from the other 3, consists of a metal ring formed of laminations having different coefficients of thermal expansion. The laminations are permanently joined together in such relationship to each other and to rotatable elements that on differential expansion or contractions, distortion of the ring takes place in a sense such as to vary the amount of running clearance. The laminated ring may have a bent profile of which the degree of bending determines the magnitude of the running clearance and is modified on differential expansion or contraction of the laminations of the ring.
