Abstract
589,720. Gravity-separation apparatus. LAWSON, A., and YOUNG, M. C. March 28, 1945, No. 7847. Convention date, July 13, 1944. [Class 46] Apparatus for separating liquids of different specific gravities, for example oil and boiler feed water, comprises a housing 10 divided into wells 17, 18, 19 by foraminous bodies 16, the lighter liquid being collected in chambers 32 and the heavier liquid being removed through a pipe 29 in the well 19. The liquid mixture enters the housing tangentially through inlet 28. The chambers 32 are connected to channels 33 situated above the wells and communicating therewith through openings 34 in the top 12 of the housing. The top walls 35 of the channels incline upwardly throughout their length to the junction with the chambers. The foraminous bodies may consist each of knitted metallic mesh fabric in rope form as described in Specification 548,809, [Group VIII], the rope 16<SP>1</SP> being wound around a perforate body portion 24 of a spool-like carrier to form a compact mass 16. Openings 27 are provided in the top flange portions of the carriers to allow the lighter liquid to escape from the masses 16. The chambers 32 and the housing 10 are provided with current pipes 36.
