[Class 86] In a stirring apparatus for treating liquid, pasty and pulverulent substances comprising a stirrer dipping into a vessel and driven in such a manner that its free end executes a spherical figure 8 movement, the angular setting of the shank of the stirrer which determines the amplitude of the 8-curve is variable. A stirring blade 5, Fig. 1, is moved in a figure 8 movement by connection to a double axis universal joint mounted on a horizontal arm 3 above a mixing bowl 16. The universal joint comprises a forked member 7 having a pivot 6 passing vertically through the arm 3, and a bolt passing through the fork 7 connects the stirrer shank at right angles to a guide piece 8 bored to receive a member 9 connected by links 11, 12 to a horizontal drive shaft W. The parts 10, 10a of the drive shaft W are movable axially and may be fixed in various positions to adjust the angular settings of the guide piece 8 and the stirrer shank and to vary the amplitude of the figure 8 movement. The bowl 16 is mounted on a pedestal which is rotatable either by a pulley 17 coupled to the drive shaft W or by arranging the bowl 16 eccentrically in relation to the pivot 6 so that the stirring action causes rotation thereof. The pivoted length of the stirrer 5 is adjusted to equal the radius of the spherical hollowing if the base of the bowl 16. In one modification, the bowl 16 is enclosed totally by a lid having a central circular flanged opening covered by a rotatable cylindrical cap which replaces the pivot 6. A horizontal pivot links the end of the stirrer shank inside the cap with a rectangular hoop which surrounds the cap and replaces the member 9. In a further modification, Fig. 3, a hemispherical bowl 51 is mounted rotatably on a vertical shaft 45 in a frame 42. A head-piece 57 is rotatably supported on the flanged central hole 56 in the cover 54 of the bowl 51, and a horizontal shaft 61 passing therethrough has affixed at right angles a stirrer shank 65 and an annular hoop 67. A drive shaft 70 rotates a crank 73 connected by a crank pin 68 to the hoop 67 to produce a figure 8 movement of the stirrer 65. The amplitude of the figure 8 movement is varied by adjustment of the effective length of the crank 73. The apparatus may be operated when the cover 54 is removed with a raising and lowering movement of the rotating bowl 51 and for this purpose the slant surface at the lower end of the shaft 45 is brought into co-operation with a slanting supporting surface 75.
