Abstract

588,932. Winding photographic films. PULLIN OPTICAL CO., Ltd., and BAIGENT, E. W. Dec. 4,1944, No. 24240. [Classes 97 (i) and 98 (i)] A mechanism in which photographic film is wound in steps from a feed spool to a take-up spool, past a projection or framing aperture, is provided with a clamping device for holding the film after a predetermined feeding movement, which movement can be varied by the setting of a manually-operated member. In the form shown, the film is wound from a spool 6 over a roller 23, both shown in section in Fig. 5, through the gate, over a sprocket 10 on to a spool 9, both of the latter being shown in section in Fig. 6. To enable the spool 6 to be readily detached, its projecting end 13 engages an openended slot in the bracket 5. A pin 21 projecting from the spring- loaded, retractable, rewinding knob 14 engages in a bore at the opposite end of the spool. A transverse key 19 attached to the knob transmits the drive from the knob to the spool. A clip 22 holds the end of the film. The winding knob 11 drives the spindle 34 through a coned portion 35 to which the sprocket is secured by a clamping nut 36. The spindle 42 is driven by gearing 39, 40, 41 from the winding knob and the spool 9 is driven therefrom by a friction spring 43. A clip 38 holds the end of the film. In the gate, the film passes between glass plates, one attached to the rear gate member and one, 24, pressed in contact with it while the film is stationary by pivoted arms 44. The pressure is provided by a cam 47 acting on the transverse member 46. The cam is secured to a spindle 49 carrying, at its outer end, an arm 53 with a toe forced by a spring 51 into one of two diametrically opposite slots in the periphery of the winding knob after winding one frame. A pin 61 is provided in the winding knob which can be forced into one of the slots by the action of a cam track in the inner face of the end cap 64 when the latter is rotated. This closes the slot and provides a double length film feed. To commence winding, the knob 11 is forced inwardly on a epline and the toe on the lever 53 is forced out of the slot by wedge action. Pins 58 on the back of gear 39 co-operate with cam tracks on a block 60 in the bracket 7 to force the knob 11 out as it is rotated so that the lever 53 may engage the next slot in the winding knob. Alternative detachable rear gate members with apertures corresponding to the frame sizes dealt with by the winding mechanism may be attached by sliding behind lugs or on to hinge pins. The glass plate' 24 is large enough to accommodate the larger frame size.
