Abstract

Glass, mica, asbestos, textile, plastic or organic sheet material surfaces are rendered water-repellent by treating them, e.g., by dipping or spraying, with hydrolysable organosilicanes, their hydrolysis products or their polymerized hydrolysis products and then heating them to a temperature below that of decomposition of the compound. The silicanes include derivatives of SiH4 which contain hydrolysable radicals such as halogens, amino groups, alkoxy, aroxy and acyloxy radicals, the remaining valencies of the Si being satisfied by radicals joined to the Si through carbon atoms, examples being aliphatic, alicyclic, aryl, alkaryl, naphthyl, aralkyl, alkenyl and heterocyclic radicals which may have halogen or other inorganic substituents. In examples methyltriethoxysilicane, dimethyldiethoxysilicane and octadecylsilicon trichloride are referred to.ALSO:Mica or asbestos surfaces are rendered water-repellent by treating them, e.g., by dipping or spraying, with hydrolysable organo-silicanes, their hydrolysis products or their polymerised hydrolysis products and then heating them to a temperature below that of decomposition of the compound.
