Abstract

588,748. Lubricating. TECALEMIT, Ltd., and LE CLAIR, C. C. S. March 6, 1945, No. 5624. [Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] A system for delivering liquid such as lubricant required at a number of points of use on a vehicle or machine, e.g., a rolling mill, comprises electrically controlled or operated delivery means for each such point or group of associated points the electric supply conductors for which electrically controlled delivery means are incorporated with the lubricant supply conduit. The electrically controlled delivery means are arranged in electric series and in series along the conduit with the lubricant continuously circulated through the conduit and tapped off at time intervals by the intermittent operation of the electrically controlled devices. The electric supply may be from transformer tappings appropriately marked for the number of devices and length of conduit in use. Polyphase current may be used. The electrically controlled delivery means may be heaters to expand the lubricant, Fig. 1, or to heat a liquid serving to operate a pump-plunger, Fig. 7 (not shown), solenoid operated plungers, Fig. 2, electric motor operated plungers with spring return of the motor, Fig. 4 (not shown), or intermittent cam action, Fig. 9 (not shown), or pumps depending for their action on magneto-striction or piezoelectric effects causing contraction in the length of a plunger rod, Fig. 5 (not shown), or increase in crystal thickness, Fig. 6 (not shown). In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the lubricant is supplied by oil-impervious hose 17 of synthetic or other suitable rubber having an inner electrically conductive lining 18 formed by plaited or woven wire. The hose is clamped by gland rings 4 on to conical metal plug pieces 8 which support between them a sleeve 10, either insulated or made of insulating material, and an electric heater element 7 concentric with but external to the sleeve. A T-piece housing 1 encloses the sleeve whereby a chamber 1A is formed outside the sleeve to which the lubricant can pass through holes 13 covered by a rubber band 14 which acts as a non-return valve. With the chamber 1A full of lubricant and the electric heater in operation the lubricant will expand and pass through a nipple 22, similarly provided with a rubber band 23 acting as a non-return valve, for delivery by pipe 25 to the point of use. When the heater cools off then a make-up flow of lubricant will pass into the chamber 1A from the supply conduit 17. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a solenoid 38 with an electro-magnet headed type of plunger 40 acts on a pumping plunger 28 which first shuts off an inlet port 31 to trap the lubricant and then forces the lubricant to its point, of use when an outlet port 35 has been opened by the forcing back of a spring-pressed plunger 30. Fig. 3 shows the connection of the supply conduit hose to the device. The hose in this case has the electric conductor 54 external to the lubricant bore 53 but covered by an outer insulating sheath 55. The passageway 34 with which the inlet port 31 communicates is formed with taper plug ends 51 on which the hose is clamped by gland rings 56 of insulating material bearing on the exposed conductor ends 54, the external sheath 55 having been removed for the required extent to allow the connection of the leads 66, 67 from the solenoid.
