Abstract
A flexible hose T, which has been made by extruding an elastomer mixture, containing one or two reinforcing inlays of steel mesh, over a rod-shaped core, surrounding this with a textile mesh, and extruding a further elastomer layer over the textile mesh, is submitted to a consolidating and vulcanizing treatment by being passed, either in steps or continuously, through a heated chamber 1 containing a cylindrical membrane 2 which is hermetically sealed at its ends to the ends of the chamber whereby fluid pressure may act via the membrane on the hose. This is effected by supplying fluid from a chamber 12 via a pipe 4 to the space 6. Pressure is preferably produced by a piston 8 acting in a cylinder 8 one end of which provides the chamber 12, piston 8 being driven by a reversible air motor 9, 10. A stop valve 14 is provided in the pipe 4 which facilitates removal of air from the latter. Heating of the chamber 1 is accomplished by applying a low voltage and high current to the ends of the chamber wall so that heating is obtained owing to the resistance of the metal from which the chamber is made. A heating coil is arranged in the chamber 12 to heat the fluid, e.g. mineral oil, therein. One or more thermostats may be used to control the temperature of the chamber wall and of the fluid in chamber 12.
