Abstract

Apparatus for applying fluid adhesive simultaneously to two surfaces of a workpiece, specifically a sole element and the wrapper portion of a shoe upper, comprises a nozzle, means for advancing the workpiece relatively to the nozzle and means for supplying the adhesive under pressure to the nozzle. The nozzle has a narrow and elongate delivery orifice in each of the two adjacent work-contacting surfaces. A slide 16, Figs. 1 and 6, is provided with a bracket arm 28 which receives the nozzle 30. In the shaft 42 is a tube leading from the nozzle through a supply conduit, a pressure gauge and pump to the adhesive container 41. A shaft 23 connected with the drive shaft 9 carries on its lower end a work-advancing roll 26. The parts are so arranged that when the <PICT:0588203/III/1> <PICT:0588203/III/2> <PICT:0588203/III/3> <PICT:0588203/III/4> nozzle is applied to the work and to the roll by rearward movement of slide 16, adhesive is permitted to flow through to the nozzle. By forward movement of the slide the flow is automatically stopped. The nozzle has an internal chamber 50, Fig. 11, and a work-engaging surface 51 provided with a vertical delivery orifice 53 and of which one marginal wall is notched to provide distributing ribs 54. The bottom surface is similar. Ports 57 and 58 communicate between the chambers 50 and orifices 53 and 55. The adjacent ends of the orifices are so spaced as to avoid delivery of adhesive into the angle where the sole and upper meet. Alternative nozzles are illustrated which by use of interchangeable plates provide orifices of different widths and/or lengths. The adhesive container 41 is provided with a leak-tight nipple 69, on the inner surface of which, behind a thin septum, is secured an elastic diaphragm furnished with an aperture. When placed in position, Fig. 16, the bracket 84 which carries a sharp-pointed cannula is swung up into position, and the tapering end pierces the septum and fits snugly in the aperture. Fig. 6 illustrates the machine in operation on a force-lasted shoe. The wrapper W is gripped between the roll and the nozzle, the roll tending to straighten the wrapper as it advances the shoe, and the adhesive is deposited as ribbons on the inner surface of the wrapper W and on the margin of the middle sole M. In a modification, the roll 127, Fig. 22, having a rim preferably of yieldable material such as rubber, has a helical rib and is of frusto-conical shape. This is fitted with a tubular shaft carrying a guide-roll 132 <PICT:0588203/III/5> <PICT:0588203/III/6> and in addition to advancing the work exerts an upward pull on the upper. The machine may also be provided with a plough arranged in front of the guide roll to turn the wrapper up to the upright position ready to receive the adhesive.
