[Class 95] A machine for applying coating material to angularly related adjacent surfaces upon a workpiece, comprises a nozzle for delivering coating material and a rotary applying member arranged to receive coating therefrom and apply it to one of the said surfaces. The machines illustrated apply a coating material, e.g. a latex cement, to a part of the flat midportion 12 of an insole I for a welted shoe, to the inner channel 14 from which the inner lip of the rib R was removed, and to the upstanding face of the inside of the rib R. The insole is presented to the nozzle 8, having valves 10, by means of upper and lower driven feed rolls 16, 18, the former carried on a shaft 20, and the latter on a shaft 26 journalled in an arm 28 mounted to rock about a pivot 32. Depression of the treadle rod 54 raises the lower feed roll to grip the work, and also controls the flow of coating material through the valves 10 of the nozzle 8 by means of a latch engaging the part 78, which permits flow to:be started before the feed rolls grip the insole, thus ensuring a coating from the very start of the operation, and which shuts off the flow before the feed is released, so that any surplus coating material in the -nozzle -is used up. The outlet of the spring-pressed nozzle 8 is divided into two sections, from one of twhich coating material is delivered to the insole surface 12, the other section surrounding a fluted roll 104 which coats the inner face of the rib R, being pressed thereagainst by the spring 130 on the rod 126. Coating material is supplied to the nozzle 8 through a hose 142 and valve tubes 150, 151 furnished with separately adjustable spring- pressed valve rods 154. A pivoted spring- urged arm 182 -carries an adjustable worksupporting table 180, a work-supporting roll 190 and a yieldably-mounted support 202. In the machine shown in Figs. 8 and 10, the feather F of the insole is gripped between upper and lower feed rolls 320, 322 the latter being movable about pivots 352. The nozzle 324 is vertically adjustable and can swing about a pivot 372. Coating material, supplied to the nozzle 324 by a tube 334, flows laterally on to a frusto-conical fluted applying roll 330 operating upon the inside of the rib R, and also downwardly on to the work, to be distributed by a shaped brush 326 on the flat mid-portion 12 of the insole and on the inner channel 14. Operation of the valve rod 336, to open the valve, is effected by means of an arm 436. 'Adjustable work gauges 498, 500 are provided in proximity to the work table 484. Depression of the treadle rod 510 causes the applying roll 330 to engage the inside surface of the insole rib R, and also raises the lower feed roll 322 and the valve rod 336.
