Abstract

Halogen-substituted ethenoid compounds in aqueous emulsion or dispersion are polymerized by using a polymer of ethylene oxide which is solid at room temperature as a protective colloid. Specified ethenoid compounds are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and the esters of a -chloro-acrylic acid; copolymers of these with other polymerizable compounds not containing a halogen atom in the molecule may be prepared. Preferred ethylene oxide polymers are those consisting of not more than 200 monomeric units per molecule, and their preferred proportions are from 0.05 to 3 per cent by weight on the aqueous phase. In an example, vinyl chloride is mixed with crotonyl peroxide, the sodium salt of sulphated lauryl alcohol, polyethylene oxide and water, the pH adjusted to 4 by use of a citric acid-sodium hydrogen phosphate buffer and the mixture heated at 40 DEG C.
