Abstract

587,708. Toys. JACOBS, P. H. Jan. 5, 1945, No. 524. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1944. [Class 132 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] An amusement device comprises a rotating sphere or disc which appears continuously to change colour. The sphere &c. is vari-coloured and is rotated rapidly about one axis and slowly about an axis at right angles thereto. Fig. 1 shows a portable form, suitable for a toy, in which a sphere 1 is mounted about an axis 2 in a ring 3, itself rotatable about an axis 7, 9 by a fan 8 or by hand-operating gearing. About the equator of the sphere 1 is fixed a bevelled friction or toothed wheel 12 which is pressed to bear against a fixed mating bevel 11, thus imparting slow rotation about the axis 2 while rapid rotation takes place about the axis 7, 9. Fig. 7 shows a form suitable for attraction purposes, comprising two half spheres 30, 31 carried by separate co-axial spindles 32 journalled in a U-frame 33 mounted on a hollow vertical shaft 36. The shaft 36 is rotatable about a fixed inner hollow post 38, and is provided with a driving pulley 35. Bevel wheels 43 on the inner ends of spindles 32 mesh with bevel wheels 42 which are provided with rim teeth engaging a fixed worm 39. The post 38 is fixed to a base 37, and leads 46 may pass up it to light lamps 40, 44 when the sphere is translucent.
