Abstract

587,400. Treating sewage &c. INFILCO, Inc. April 17, 1944, No. 7054. Convention date, April 21, 1943. [Class 111] An activated sludge process of treating sewage and other waste liquors includes the steps of passing the sewage through an aeration zone, clarifying aerated sewage, discharging the clarified sewage to waste, returning bacterial solids separated from the clarified sewage to the aeration zone, and continuously mixing with the sewage entering the aeration zone unclarified aerated sewage taken from the outlet of the aeration zone in an amount controlled to produce a calculated time period for normal flow through the aeration zone. The amount of aerated sewage returned is preferably such that the time of flow of mixed liquor once through the aerator approximates to the time taken for the bacterial activity to reach its maximum. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, sewage after being partly purified in a primary clarifier 11, passes through conduit 15 to an aerator 16 containing air-diffusers 19. Baffles 21, 22 are provided to distribute the flow of sewage. The outlet pipe 23 is connected to a conduit 24 through which aerated sewage is recycled by a pump 25 back to the inlet 15 of the aerator. The pipe 23 also leads to a sedimentation chamber 28 from which clarified liquid is discharged through an outlet'35. Sludge is moved by raking mechanism 29 to an outlet 30, part of the sludge being discharged through a conduit 31 and part being returned by conduit 33 to the inlet end of the aerator. In a modification the aerator is divided by partitions into basins, each with a mechanical aerator. Fig. 5 shows respiration curves in which are compared the oxygen utilization of a conventional activated sludge plant (A) and a plant (D) in accordance with the invention, in the latter case sewage passing through the aerator in one hour, while due to recycling its total time in the aerator is three hours.
