Abstract
587,255. Collapsable cores. McDOUGALL, G. C. Nov. 9, 1944. No. 22047. [Class 87 (ii)] A collapsable core unit for use in the manufacture of hollow concrete beams, floor and ceiling units, and like concrete products, comprises two longitudinal side-forming members 10, Figs. 3 and 4, of substantially C-form in cross-section which are swingable inwardly and outwardly about longitudinal hinge axes 11 spaced apart widthwise of the unit, the inward and outward movements of the side-forming members being controlled by a pair of shafts 12 extending longitudinally within the core unit. Each shaft is connected to one of the side members by means of a flexible connection 13 so that, by rotation of the shafts, the flexible connections are caused to wrap themselves upon, or to unwrap themselves from, the respective shafts. A metallic plate 16 closes the space between the axes 11. The shafts 12 are journalled in brackets spaced within the core unit and in rigid end plate members 15 beyond which the shafts project at one or both ends of the unit, so that they may be rotated by the application of a key.to their protruding ends 12a. For the purpose of retaining the side members 10 in spread condition when the core unit is in use there are inserted through the gaps 18, between the end plate members 15 and the side .members 10, at each end of the core unit, the limbs of a U-shaped metallic clip member.
