Abstract

586,891. Depositing substances by discharges. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ROLLIN, L., and WEAVER, C. Nov. 13, 1944,-No. 22393. [Class 39 (i)] In a method of sputtering a coating of gold or silver on to a body of crystalline quartz, or glass or other material containing silica a preliminary step is provided of exposing the surface to be coated to a solution of a reducing agent. A piece of piezo-electric quartz crystal may be dipped in a N solution of stannous chloride or ferrous sulphate, dried and then coated with gold or silver by sputtering.
