Abstract

Seeds are wetted with a liquid dispersion of benzene hexachloride and subsequently dried, the resulting film on the seeds enhancing their resistance to pests. The dispersion of benzene hexachloride may be a solution in benzene, xylene, toluene, dioxane, methyl acetate, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene or perchlorethylene, or an aqueous dispersion containing dispersing agents such as goulac, oleyl alcohol, dodecanol, octadecanol, turkey red oil or sodium lauryl sulphate with or without a solvent for the benzene hexachloride. The dispersion may also contain a fungicide such as hydroxymercurichlorphenol, hydroxymercurinitrophenol, hydroxymercuricresol, ethyl mercurichloride, ethylmercurisulphate phenyl-mercuriacetate tolyl mercuriacetate, cresol mercuricyanide or tetramethylthiuram disulphide; or fungicides based on mercurous chloride, mercuric chloride, cuprous oxide, cupric oxide, copper carbonate, phosphate or silicate. Such fungicide may be dispersed in the aqueous phase, the non-aqueous phase comprising benzene hexachloride. After drying, the seeds may be treated with an inert dust such as talc, powdered gypsum or graphite to render them free flowing. The benzene hexachloride used preferably contains a proportion of the gamma-isomer. Suitable fungicides include hydroxymercurichlorophenol, hydroxymercurinitrophenol, hydroxymercuricresol, ethylmercurichloride, ethylmercurisulphate, phenylmercuriacetate, tolylmercuriacetate, cresol mercuricyanide or tetramethylthiuram disulphide; or fungicides based on mercurous chloride, mercuric chloride, cuprous oxide, cupric oxide, copper carbonate, phosphate or silicate. Specified solvents for the benzene hexachloride are benzene, xylene, toluene, dioxane, methylacetate, ethylenedichloride, trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene. The aqueous phase of the dispersion may contain a wetting agent such as goulac, oleyl alcohol, dodecanol, octadeconal, turkey red oil or sodium lauryl sulphate.
