[Class 135] The supply of motive fluid to an engine, such as a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator, is controlled by a speed governor which is provided with manual or motor-driven means for effecting normal speed adjustments and, in addition, automatic means acting in response to sudden and great variations of the load to effect a rapid reduction or increase in the supply of the motive fluid. As shown in the Figure, a speed governor 4 controls a valve 7 to supply pressure oil from a pipe 9 to a pipe 10 leading to the cylinder 11 of a servomotor for operating the steam inlet valve 12 of a turbine, a follow-up action being obtained through a pivoted lever 14 and a control valve sleeve 8. The lever 14 is pivoted at 15 in a cylindrical block 16 which is adjustable either manually or by motor-driven means through a screwed spindle 18 in a nut 20 to alter the setting of the governor. The nut 20 is normally held in the position shown by a stop 25 which is actuated by an electromagnet 27 in the event of any sudden and great variation of the load, such as the generator circuit interrupter operating, to allow the nut 20 to be moved upwards by a spring 23 to actuate the control valve sleeve 8 to effect a rapid adjustment of the steam valve 12. In a modified arrangement the nut 20 is actuated by a sudden increase of load to effect a rapid opening of the steam valve.
