Abstract

586,303. Power steering for vehicles. BLAW KNOX, Ltd., and WILSON, S. Sept. 18, 1945, No. 24113. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Groups XXI and XXXII] As shown the coupling connects a tractor 1 with a scraper bowl 5, Fig. 1, and comprises a conical spigot 9 rigidly fixed to the frame 13 of the tractor, the upper end being bored longitudinally to receive a pin 17 forming the pivot of a king-pin 19 adapted to rock transversely of the vehicle. A sleeve 20 surrounds the king- pin and rotates about its axis by means of a bearing 23, the sleeve being integral with a bracket 26 to which is rigidly fixed at 27 the draw-bar of the scraper. The sleeve is rotated for steering purposes by a sprocket wheel 43, Fig. 4, rotatable around the spigot 9, the sprocket having transverse pins to engage bosses 35 of a stirrup 34, a boss at the centre of the stirrup being engaged by a pin 41 attached to a bracket 39 depending from the bracket 26; Fig. 1. A chain 44, Fig. 4, engages half the sprocket wheel and each end is led over a pulley 45 of a hydraulic plunger 46 and is attached to the hydraulic cylinder 47 at 48. Simultaneous admission of pressure fluid to one cylinder and exhaustion of the other permits rotation of 'the sprocket 43 and with it the stirrup 34 with consequential movement of the draw-bar around the king-pin 19. The vehicle may be steered by braking the wheels or a drum and rope may be used in lieu of the sprocket.
