Abstract
586,040. Transfers. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 23, 1944, No. 11945. Convention date, June 24, 1943. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A transfer comprising a base upon which compositions may be coated, cast, or printed for enabling transfers of printed impressions, photographic films, or waterproofing compositions to be made is constructed with a substantially non- porous, smooth-surfaced base sheet coated with a composition having an aminophosphatide as its essential ingredient, the lecithins prepared artificially or contained in natural products being the preferred aminophosphatides used. The aminophosphatide may be combined with resins, pigments, cellulose derivatives, starch derivatives and/or proteins to form a hard coating, and the lecithin comprises from 25 per cent. to 90 per cent. by weight of the solid components of the composition. The base may comprise films or sheets of cellulosic material such as regenerated cellulose, cellulose ethers or esters; calendered paper, and glassine, or of polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetals, acrylonitrile polymers, polyethylene, polyamides, or natural and synthetic rubber and derivatives thereof. These sheets may be waterproofed before application of the lecithin coating. The film or coating which is formed on the aminophosphatide surface may be composed of ethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyethylene, polyamides, polyisobutylene, rubber hydrochloride and cyclized rubber, acrylonitrile polymers, metacrylate polymers, polyvinyl alcohol or acetate, polyvinyl acetals, copolymers of vinyl acetate and chloride, vinylidenechloride, and vinyl chloride, and the composition may contain resins, plasticisers, and/or waxes. The aminophosphatide may be applied to the film in any known way. One example of the making- of a transfer is to coat both sides of a regenerated cellulose film having a thickness of 0.00115 inch with a liquid containing 15 parts of soya-bean lecithin, ethyl cellulose 15 parts, toluene 570. parts by weight. After drying the film is topcoated on one side with a heavy coating (0.001 inch) of a waterproof composition as followsnitrocellulose 40 parts, paraffin wax 3 parts, chlorinated paraffin wax 1 part, di-butyl phthalate 12.5 parts, dicyclohexyl phthalate 37.5 parts, toluene 380 parts, ethyl acetate 475 parts, ethyl alcohol 17 parts. An adhesive with 15 parts polyisobutylene resin, and 85 parts of toluene is applied to the top-coat before it is 'stripped from the lecithin surface, and the adhesive surface is pressed into contact witb a paper sheet which adheres thereto permitting a clean stripping of the lecithin surface with the film to be transferred. Specification 205,011, [Class 2 (iii)], and U.S.A. Specification 1,895,424 are referred to.
