Abstract

585,263. Multiplex wireless signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 9, 1945, No. 3364. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1944. [Class 40 (v)] A frequency-modulated currier is keyed to produce pulses of constant recurrence frequency, phase duration and amplitude. The communication channel thus formed may comprise one of a number of such channels intercalated to produce a multiplex system. At the transmitter of the multiplex system described, each channel has a F.M. oscillator 400, 420, 440, Fig. 4, feeding an amplifier 406, 426, 446 and coupler 409, 429, 449, the combined signals feeding a common amplifier 410 and aerial 411. A keying control means 415 is connected to keying means 408, 428, 448, which produce the channel pulses, those in the second and third channel being appropriately delayed for intercalation by phase-shifters 425, 445. A special synchronizing signal may be introduced in the first channel from source 412. At the receiver, Fig. 5, an R.F. amplifier 502 feeds a frequency changer 503 and individual I.F. channel amplifiers 504, 524, 534. These are followed by gating stages 505, 525, 535, frequency discriminator demodulators 505A, 525A, 535A, A.F. amplifiers 506, 526, 536, low-pass filters 507, 527, 537 and reproducers 508, 528, 538. The I.F. amplifiers are blocked during the intervals between the pulses of their particular channel by circuits 509, 529, 539 controlled through phase shifters 512, 522, 532 from the output of a detector 510, fed direct from the frequency changer 503, and a filter 511 which selects the basic pulse recurrence frequency component from the composite received wave which is gapped at this frequency. The appropriately timed unblocking pulse is derived in the circuits 509, 529, 539 by clipping and shaping this basic frequency phase-displaced wave. When a special synchronizing modulation is used it is derived from the output of the discriminator 505A. The blocking voltage may be applied to R.F. amplifier or frequency changer if they are separate for each channel. The signals may be transmitted over a highfrequency line or wave guide instead of a radio link.
