Abstract
585,056. Variable-pitch propellers. GENERAL MOTORS S CORPORATION, Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15694. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1943. [Class 114] Contra-rotating sets of propellers 20, 28 are each provided with their own operating pumps 194, driven by the engine shaft for changing pitch. The in. board pump output is controlled by the valve 270 which moves radially under to the influence of centrifugal force against the spring-loaded lever 276 to give constant speed running, the speed being selected by the position of the roller 16 moved by the track 333 by the pilot. The output of the outboard engine pump is controlled, by the valve 438, which is moved radially by the cam 418 moved by the epi cylic trains 396, 392, 394, 384 382, 380, 390, thus ensuring simultaneous and similar opera tion of the outboard propeller set. Initial relative setting of the two sets of blades is obtained by pushing the gear 480, 484 out o: engagement while settings are made. The blades are turned by a device described in Specification 545,520. The various units are initially balanced by attaching loading discs both internally and externally. A cowling in the parts 36, 40 is supported resiliently, from the propeller bosses. It encloses 82, 92, etc. passing de-icing fluid to each boss.
