Abstract

585,015. Toy boats. ROSE, G. E. Jan. 2, 1945, No. 116. [Class 132 (iii)] Propulsion means for a model boat or the like comprise a rearwardly flared nozzle within which extends the free surface of the water on which the model floats, in combination with means for feeding a propellant liquid such as methylated spirit to the surface of the water within the forward narrow end of the nozzle. A toy boat fitted with such means is shown in sectional elevation, Fig. 5, and in underplan, Fig. 3, and is made of thin waterproofed card. The propelling liquid, which reduces the surface tension of the water, is carried in a tank 18 having a removable cover, and a wick 22 extends through the bottom of the tank into the water at the forward end of a V-shaped nozzle 12 so that the propelling liquid spreads out on to the surface of the water. In a modification (not shown) the bottom of the boat extends across the lower side of the nozzle and in place of the wick, a tube extends downwards from the tank through which passes a wire from the tank to a point below the water surface. In a further modification, Fig. 9, the model is very light and waterproofed with paraffin wax so that it floats on the surface of the water. The nozzle 12 in this case is a V-shape notch in the bottom 14 of the model, and the end of the wick 22 just touches the water surface. Obstruction of the water surface within the nozzle is prevented by a hole 36 in the stern of the model. All models have a protective ledge 38 formed on the water line.
