Abstract
A film consists of a polymerized organic material with which is incorporated a granular inorganic filler of a high dielectric constant, the ratio of film thickness to maximum grain size of the filler being substantially at or between 1.2 to 1 and 4 to 1, and the quantity of filler being sufficient to raise the dielectric constant of the film by at least 200 per cent. The preferred range of the ratio of film thickness to grain size is between 1.2 to 1 and 2.1. Specified polymerized organic materials are polystyrene, polyisobutylene, polyethylene, mixtures of these, or cellulose plastics such as cellulose acetate. Plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, insecticides such as pyridine and non-flam material such as one of the chlorinated esters of phthalic and may also be present. Specified inorganic fillers are titanium dioxide, barium titanate, strontium titanate and ceramic material. The filler may consist of a mixture of two or more powders of progressively decreasing size. An example is given of a film of polystyrene containing titanium dioxide. The films may be used as dielectrics in condensers (see Group XXXVI). Specification 508,057 is referred to.
