Abstract
584,523. Tanks. ARNOLD, C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15722. [Class 69 (i)] A container for hot fluids comprises an outer metal shell 1, an inner metal liner 3 spaced from the shell and an imperforate frustoconical metal plate 5 welded at one end to the shell 1 and at the other end to the liner, to prevent the flow of fluid through the space between the shell and liner. Corrosion of insulation inside the shell and failure of the shell due to excessive temperatures is thus obviated. The upper and lower ends of the liner 3 may be free. The shell 1 is lined with refractory material 2, e.g. refractory cement or firebrick, which may be sufficiently spaced from the liner 3 to allow for radial expansion of the latter. The liner 3 may be vertically fluted to allow for radial expansion. A gap 4 in the lining 2 to accommodate the plate 5 may be filled with compressible insulating material, e.g. rock wool, powdered magnesia or alumina, or lead slag wool. A manhole 8 in the shell is fitted with a sleeve 9 containing insulating material. A corresponding opening in the liner 3 is closed by a plate 12 secured to a flange on a collar 10 by hook-headed bolts 14.
