583,778. Boring-bar machines. MALIA, A. Dec. 4, 1944, No. 24188. [Class 83 (iii)] In a portable boring-bar machine for the main bearings of crank-cases, two brackets 3 are erected on the joint face of the crank-case 1 and support, in slots 3a, a cross-head 6 having a central rectangular recess containing a knurled screw 7 having a chamfer 7a. The chamfered face abuts clamping-pads 8 which project into bores 6a, in the cross-head, arranged parallel to and in a horizontal plane with the joint face. Two threaded studs 6b project from the centre of the cross-head sides and locate in slots 3a ; the studs have nuts 12 and washers 13 to position the cross-head. A central stud 14 is supported in bracket 3 and allows vertical adjustment of the cross-head by means of wheel 16 and plate 15. Two alignment rods 9, 10 fit the bores 6a which are of different diameters to ensure correct fitting of five brackets 11 carried by the rods. These brackets have similar adjusting screws 7 bearing on pads 8 to clamp them to the rods and a lower portion 11a acts as a bearing for the boring-bar. The brackets 3 complete with cross-heads are erected at either end of the crank-case with brackets 11 slidable on rods 9, 10 and the bearing 11a approximately coaxial with the main bearings. Bearing caps 2 are removed from the crank-case, a boring-bar is inserted in the bearing 11 a and the caps replaced minus their bearing bushes. Setting is effected by arranging a flanged half bush in each of the two main bearings beneath bracket 3 and adjusting the cross-head and height of .brackets 11 until it is possible to move the bush completely round the boring-bar. Cross-head is then locked by nuts 12. Remaining brackets 11 can then be positioned and will be in correct alignment due to their common support on the rods. Bores 6a may be arranged in a vertical or other plane and more than three alignment rods may be used.
