Abstract
583,624. Making wire articles. SPORING, P. A., JOHNSON, C. P., and TELEGRAPH CONDENSER CO., Ltd. Nov. 9, 1944, No. 22053. [Class 83 (iv)] Angular bending ; shearing.-A wire stem 1 is provided with a symmetrical eyolet 2 by first bending the end of a continuous wire W, Fig. 6, to form an eyelet to one side thereof and then bending the stem in the plane of the eyelet to make them symmetrical. The wire is then fed and the article cut off. The wire, not shown in Figs. 2, 3, is assumed to have been fed by mutilated rollers 31, 32, driven by a friction clutch 5, shaft 6 and gears 33, 34, through a guide 4 to a rotary head 3 with formers 11, 12. The head is rotated through 225 degrees from the position shown in Fig. 2 by a pinion 9, rack 23, cam 24, shaft 8 and bevel gears 7 from the shaft 6 to produce the eyelet 2, Fig. 6. The guide 4 is then moved to produce symmetry by rotating its shaft 13, Fig. 3, slightly against the action of a spring 30, Fig. 2, by an arm 27 and cam 29 on the shaft 6. The head 3 is then lowered, to release the eyelet 2, by a ball bearing 15 trunnioned to a lever 17 operated by a spring 21 and a cam 20 on the shaft 6. The guide 4 is returned to its normal position, the wire is fed again to give the desired length of stem and cutters 42, 43 are advanced by spring-returned levers 48, 49, arm 55 and a cam 57 on the shaft to cut off the completed article which falls down a shoot 58. The head 3 is then raised to engage the severed end of the wire by the cam 20 and the operations are repeated indefinitely. The length of wire fed may be adjusted by raising a spring-pressed 'lever 35 pivoted at 36 which carries the roller 32, rotating this relative to the roller 31 and then allowing the gears 33, 34 to re-engage in the new position.
